No Atheists In Foxholes – April 19, 2011
No one knows for sure the exact origin of this phrase but many credit it to Lieutenant-Colonel William J. Clear or Lieutenant-Colonel William Casey. However, most times journalist Ernie Pyle receives credit for the phrase. Whatever the case may be, the phrase “There are no atheists in foxholes” is used to describe soldiers facing combat. It’s in the middle of combat that many soldiers come face to face with the reality that they need divine power to keep them safe in the midst of battle.
I’ve always known military people have a strong faith, but now as I interact with more military people that is becoming even more evident. That is also the reason we are thrilled to be connected with a great church supporting our troops and supporting Ben.
The picture for today features my good friend and Ben’s Pastor from Faith Temple in Rochester, New York. Pastor Steve Edlin has been a huge support for us through many years and especially during the past few months with Ben away at Basic Training in Fort Benning, GA. Yesterday General Sarge was on a special Road Trip. It seemed only fitting that he visit with Pastor Steve to give him an update on just how well his human-owner PVT Ben is doing at Fort Benning.
One of the things General Sarge made sure he told Pastor Steve about is the fact that it’s official! PVT Ben has completed his training and received his official Infantryman pin! After spending a week doing outdoor maneuvers and various war game training sessions his Platoon ran to the top of Honor Hill where they were pinned with this Infantryman pin. Ben said it was quite exciting and it’s a huge achievement!
It’s hard to believe but after shipping out in mid-January, Ben is now almost set for graduation. We are excited and looking forward to making our way to Fort Benning, GA at the end of this month to be part of this proud moment.
